Comfort Considerations
A firm feel is recommended for tummy sleepers, some back sleepers, or if your weight is significantly greater than average. A medium feel is suitable for the majority of people and is best suited to side sleepers and most back sleepers. A plush feel is generally reserved for side sleepers, that are either lighter than average or have a specific pressure relief requirements.
Extra Firm
An extra firm mattress is the hardest option. This would only be a consideration under specific requirements.
Firm
A firm mattress is harder than a medium. A firm is best suited to tummy sleepers and some back sleepers.
Medium
A medium mattress is the overall sweet spot and recommended for the majority of side sleepers and most back sleepers.
Plush
A plush mattress is a softer option for lighter side sleepers or those with specific pressure relief requirements.
Ultra Plush
An ultra plush mattress is the softest option, for select mattress models only and it requires consideration.
As a side sleeper, there is less body surface area in contact with the mattress and your hips and shoulders protrude, therefore a medium feel ensures your spine is correctly supported by the spring system whilst the comfort layer relieves pressure points. As a back sleeper, with a normal curvature of the spine, a medium mattress is suitable as your bottom needs to sink in enough to ensure your lower lumbar region has the correct support – that said if you are a back sleeper with a flat bottom and back you may consider a firm mattress! As a tummy sleeper the general rule is that a firmer feel is recommended to ensure that you do not arch your spine. If you are an all over sleeper then lean towards medium (or a firm if you sleep more on your tummy). In summary, your comfort consideration is based on your shape, weight, height and the way you sleep.
Support Considerations
Inner Spring
An inner spring mattress has the strongest support and durability. It also provides the greatest airflow within the mattress.
Pocket Spring
A pocket spring mattress provides reduced partner disturbance and extra contouring for hips and shoulders.
Hybrid Pocket
A hybrid pocket spring mattress contains pockets springs that are nestled within the foam layer and unique to specific models.
Pure Latex
A pure, natural latex mattress has no springs and is usually matched with a special base with slats that flex to adjust to each sleeper.
The key function of the support system is to maintain proper spinal alignment whilst you sleep – both an inner spring mattress and a pocket spring mattress achieve this objective. If your preference is reduced partner disturbance, then consider a pocket spring. If your preference is for more rigid support then consider an inner spring. The hybrid pocket is a unique system that has pocket springs inserted into a foam core and specific to one model only. Lastly, there are specialty options include both foam and pure latex which tend to be on the premium end of the scale.
Size Considerations
A super king is the largest size available as one mattress. A king is a wonderful option to consider as an every-night luxury. A queen is the most practical size for couples and individual sleepers. A double is suitable when room space is a factor. A king single is a good length and a wider option for individual sleepers. A long single is essentially used in pairs to make up a king. A single is a first bed or if space is at a premium.

In general, your new mattress would replace the size you already have. All your linen stays the same. That said, a mattress is a long-term investment and it is worth considering your future needs and longer term benefits. If you have the space, bigger is better for sleeping, however smaller is better if you actively use the space in your room. Find the perfect balance for you. Remember to check your measurements!
